Concurrent Technologies Corporation's Paul Brezovec to Discuss Quinone Redox Flow Battery Electrode Testing at The Electrochemical Society's Conference in Glasgow, Scotland

JOHNSTOWN, Pa., July 21, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mr. Paul Brezovec, Principal Process Engineer and Engineering Research Fellow at Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC), will be a presenter at the Electrochemical Society Conference on Electrochemical Energy Conversion & Storage, held July 26–31, 2015, in Glasgow, Scotland. Mr. Brezovec's presentation will take place on Tuesday, July 28 and will focus on Quinone Redox Flow Battery Testing.

This is the first of a series of planned conferences in Europe by The Electrochemical Society (ECS) on electrochemical energy conversion/storage materials, concepts, and systems. This major forum will discuss interdisciplinary research from around the world with the intent to bring together scientists and engineers to discuss both fundamental advances and engineering innovations.

Mr. Brezovec's presentation, "Quinone Redox Flow Battery Testing," stems from a paper written by Mr. Brezovec and three CTC colleagues: Tim Kennedy, Principal Mechanical Engineer; Dan Markiewicz, Senior Principal Electrical Engineer; and Michel McCluskey, Senior Design Engineer. In their paper, the authors discuss how the efficiency and cost of a redox flow battery (RFB) can be significantly affected by the electrode selected for scale-up.

Carbon felt has traditionally been used as the electrode in flow batteries, but flow battery design requires it to be highly compressed, thereby requiring high pumping power, which can lead to battery leakage problems. Therefore, the authors tested the charge/discharge performance of the RFB when employing composite electrodes in quinone electrolytes. Testing showed that the composite electrode has advantages over the felt, such as having the potential to increase the efficiency of the flow battery. CTC is leveraging testing results for its scale-up RFB.
