More Moms Prefer Temporal Artery Thermometers Than Any Other Thermometer Type

Rectal Thermometry Usage Among Newborns on the Decline

WATERTOWN, Mass., Aug. 6, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A new survey of expectant mothers and mothers with small children reveals that nearly half prefer a temporal artery thermometer when thinking about or purchasing a new thermometer after their baby is born. The data shows year over year the decline of moms using rectal, ear and underarm thermometers on babies zero to three months old. Additionally, more than half (58%) of respondents deems accuracy proven through more clinical studies as the highest consideration when deciding what thermometer to use.

"These results mirror those of similar surveys affirming that nurses and physicians agree that accuracy and ease of use contribute to their reliance upon and preference for the TemporalScanner and reducing the use of rectal thermometers," said Dr. Francesco Pompei, CEO of Exergen Corporation. "It is rewarding for us to know that moms also appreciate the superiority of temporal artery thermometers over other types, as we designed the Exergen TemporalScanner with particular features to make their life easier when caring for a sick newborn or young child."

Other survey findings include:

  • 44% of respondents who are pregnant or are considering parenthood plan on purchasing a different type of thermometer.
  • 80% of respondents already purchased a new thermometer when they have a baby or will purchase when they have a baby. Of that group, 40% already have purchased or plan to purchase a temporal artery thermometer.
  • 63% of respondents considered or will consider changing their thermometer when their infant becomes a toddler. Of that group, 43% will purchase or have purchased a temporal artery thermometer.

The survey was conducted through Babiesonline.com, a premier source for information on motherhood, family and parenting, pregnancy, and birth. More than 1,000 expectant mothers and mothers with small children participated in the study, providing information on thermometer preferences.
