CHICAGO, Aug. 25, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Jordannah Bangi, a student at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, has been awarded the Filipino American Lawyers Association (FALA) of Chicago Law Student Scholarship Award.

The FALA of Chicago Law Student Scholarship – the first of its kind from the association – was awarded to Bangi at the Association's Annual Summer Soirée. Bangi, a 2L at John Marshall, is interested in practicing food law and working to strengthen food safety regulations by implementing policies that will protect consumers from misbranding.

"This scholarship will allow me to fulfill my educational goals and continue to contribute my valuable experience, background and skills to a variety of projects impacting the Filipino American community," Bangi said. Before starting at John Marshall, Bangi received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis and her master's degree in public policy and administration from Northwestern University.

As a law student, Bangi has applied her analytical, writing and research skills to a variety of local community challenges, including food insecurity, childhood obesity and urban farming. She also works with the Chicago Food Policy Advisory Council, the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the organization Common Threads, whose goal is to address childhood obesity in low-income, urban communities.

Recently, Bangi was selected to participate in the Harvard Food Law Student Leadership Summit at Harvard Law School. The Summit will be held Oct. 2-4, 2015, and will provide a forum for training, networking and engagement among law students interested in food law and policy.

In order to qualify for the FALA scholarship, a student must be enrolled in an accredited law school, have an excellent academic record, be able to show financial need, be a current member of FALA and demonstrate a commitment to the Filipino American legal community at large.

"I will make full use of this scholarship award, substantively contribute to the important work of FALA Chicago, and use my experience to be a strong legal advocate on behalf of the Filipino American community in the years to come," Bangi said.

Bangi has been an active member of FALA Chicago for several years and has supported the organization in its various activities in the legal community. She is a candidate of The John Marshall Law Review and The John Marshall Moot Court Honors Council and a member of the Phi Delta Phi Honor Society.  She also serves as a teaching assistant for torts and LS III, a legal writing course on appellate writing and oral argument.
