OTTAWA, Sept. 24, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Canadian Shipowners Association (CSA) is proud to celebrate World Maritime Day, which the United Nations has declared for September 24th in recognition of the highly skilled and essential nature of the global marine transportation industry.
The CSA recognizes this year's theme of Maritime Education and Training as a means of highlighting the high level of skills, training and performance which Canadian mariners must achieve and demonstrate.
"Capable and professional Canadian mariners are inextricably linked to safe and sustainable operations,' said CSA President Robert Lewis-Manning, "it makes a lot of sense to focus on mariners on this day." Canadian mariners operate state of the art Canadian vessels in some of the most challenging waters in the world to move goods, cargos and people.
The Canadian Shipowners Association represents Canadian domestic vessels operating on the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River, the Canadian East Coast, and the Canadian Arctic. Over half of the commodities traded move between Canada and the United States. The annual economic benefit of domestic short sea shipping is approximately $34 billion, creating 227,000 jobs in Canada and the United States.
