QASymphony Survey: Software-Driven Companies Operate Differently

Companies That Use Software to Automate Core Processes Place a Higher Value on Technology Leadership and Code Quality

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwired - Oct 15, 2015) - QASymphony has completed a survey of nearly 600 IT and business professionals worldwide. The goal of the research was to understand how companies are using software to run their businesses, and the impact it has on everything from company culture and business planning to employee training and customer engagement. The study included QASymphony customers and was conducted online July 8 through September 21.

Technology has evolved in the business world from enabler of specific tasks to an engine of growth, profitability, collaboration, innovation, retention and more. Amazon, Google, Netflix, Uber and others have demonstrated how the use of modern, cloud-based software and concepts like agile and devops can disrupt even the most established industries. In fact, software's ability to transform entire industries has become so widespread that, today, companies across industries have begun to view themselves as being in the software business.

Evidence of this trend can be found in the latest research from QASymphony:

  • 65% of respondents said that software drives their company's most important decisions
  • 63% said that the way software companies operate is fundamentally differently than other companies, and that there are very important, very valuable distinctions
  • 66% said that as much as half of all time spent by their companies on software development time is consumed by ensuring code quality and/or fixing software bugs
  • 52% said that their companies are using mobile apps, social media and other applications as part of a broader customer engagement strategy
  • 28% said they are saving money on manual tasks and errors through the use of software
  • 22% said that the quality of a company's software -- the kind it uses and/or sells -- is paramount to its success and ability to grow

"When reviewing the survey, what stands out most is the depth to which software can influence the way companies big and small operate and drive better results," says Jeff Perkins, CMO at QASymphony. "According to the data and input from our customers, software doesn't support a business; it can create, transform and revolutionize a business. This tells us that essentially, every company is a software company and this puts a real premium on software quality. We believe that the market for tools that ensure and enhance software quality is about to take off."
