As metal AM begins to be used for direct manufacturing and not just prototyping, many powder producers are beginning to match powders not just with particular print processes, but also the actual end use parts for which they are intended. Smaller producers wanting to specialize in additive have led the market in investing money to build new powder production equipment and optimizing these designs to produce powder specifically for AM, rather than simply selling acceptable powder already produced on existing equipment (at low yields) at a very high markup.

Spurred by the growth in metal AM, there is now an increasing variation in metal powder production for additive manufacturing, with entirely new processes being tested as well as development of purpose-built variations of traditional atomization processes. Investment across the metal powder production market is being catalyzed by the evolution in metal AM towards advanced and serial manufacturing applications in medical, aerospace, energy, and more.

Perhaps the most significant regional growth story in metal additive manufacturing over the course of the last year has been in Asia, which is expected to account for $316 Million in metals powders by 2021.
