Report: IT Pros Not Confident They Can Detect System Intrusions, Malware

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwired - February 24, 2016) - ControlScan, the managed security service provider (MSSP) IT leaders and their organizations rely upon for unified security and compliance, announced today that it has released the results of a new market study on the state of security threat management within the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME).

ControlScan surveyed IT professionals and others supporting the IT function within SMEs across multiple industries. According to the study report, The State of Security Threat Management within the Small and Medium Enterprise, 74 percent of survey respondents are not confident they can detect intruders or malware in their network. This lack of confidence is due in large part to expanding security priorities coupled with flatlining security budgets. One-third of survey respondents are working with the same security budget in 2016 that they had in 2015 -- and in 2014.

"ControlScan undertook this study because we wanted to better understand how IT professionals are prioritizing and implementing security threat management in the small and medium enterprise," said ControlScan Senior Vice President Steve Robb. "What we found is that IT pros are concerned about data security, but they aren't confident in their ability to effectively manage priorities surrounding the growing threat landscape."

 Additional findings from the ControlScan State of Security Threat Management survey include:

  • 62 percent feel their organization's security-related investments are not sufficient for their business's level of risk;
  • 52 percent of respondents' organizations do not employ a full-time security professional; and
  • 48 percent of respondents with no internal security resource are conducting their own security risk assessments.

"Threat management efforts should be regularly evaluated and aligned to meet the challenges of the evolving threat landscape," Robb said. "This includes making the best use of internal staff and security technologies while leveraging security-as-a-service to close any gaps."

IT professionals can utilize the information and recommendations presented in the State of Security Threat Management study report to open a dialogue with organizational leadership about the necessary steps for building a stronger security posture.
