HELSINKI, FINLAND--(Marketwired - March 16, 2016) - A new Finnish mobile app is poised to make car ownership unnecessary. The app now allows residents of the Kalasatama district of Helsinki to book a car from a local car rental, and it will soon integrate all forms of public transportation into mobility packages that cater for the transportation needs of citizens. The app is in pilot use by 15 Kalasatama residents.
The Mobility-as-a-Service app, developed by the urban travel solutions provider Tuup of Finland, is one of four rapid experiments conducted this spring as parts of a Kalasatama pilots program to develop smart services for citizens. The other experiments comprise a sharing economy app that allows residents to trade services; apps developed from data produced by sensors for remote monitoring of street waste containers; and novel sensors that monitor the expiration of foods, intended to reduce food waste.
Kalasatama is an inner city district of Helsinki under construction and development at the site of a former commercial harbor. The City of Helsinki has designated the district as a development platform for smart urban solutions. The solutions both lead Helsinki toward a carbon-neutral future and ease the lives of residents with digital services envisioned to free one hour per day from everyday chores. The district is projected to grow from the current 2,000 to 20,000 residents and to provide 8,000 jobs by 2030.
Smart Kalasatama embraces sustainable energy solutions, advanced waste management technology, and urban living experiments. Residents are key to the development of sustainable, resource-efficient lifestyles both as testers of new services in real life situations and as initiators of novel concepts.
Previous rapid experiments in the Kalasatama pilots program include "smart containers" implemented in 2015. The containers fulfilled multiple roles: they housed a self-service public library, a recyclable goods collection station, and a distribution station for locally produced foods.
Resident initiatives have produced improvements in neighborhoods including playgrounds and landscaped construction sites. Citizens are encouraged to develop tailored housing concepts, and one outcome is the co-created Senior House, a property and community in which elderly people live together assisting each other with everyday routines.
