Special Event: The International Turkic Academy Convenes Symposium on the Silk Road at the UN Headquarters

Symposium to Feature High Representatives of the UN


NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Mar 24, 2016) - The Turkic Academy, which is also known as "Turkic World Educational and Scientific Cooperation Organization" (TWESCO), �n international institution that promotes and coordinates the enhancement of scientific and educational cooperation among Turkic-speaking nations, today announced that the organization will be holding a symposium on the Silk Road at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on March 28, 2016.

The International Turkic Academy with its partners organizes the High-Level Symposium on the theme "Synergies along the Silk Road for Agenda 2030." It is expected that this remarkable event will be attended by the High Representatives of the UN, Permanent Representatives of various countries to the UN, Ambassadors, top executives of international organizations, and distinguished scholars and intellectuals.

This prestigious and unique event is jointly organized with various Permanent Missions to the UN, international organizations of the Turkic Council and supported by TURKSOY, Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation, Michigan State University, and Hazar Strategy Institute.

The symposium will be divided into three panels, each one discussing specific aspects of the ancient and modern Silk Road. Speakers and discussants will focus on ways of enhancing global peace and security on the Silk Road and beyond, reaching UN sustainable development goals through endorsing the Silk Road. The emphasis will also be on the global threats of epidemics, transnational crime, violent extremism, terrorism, the forced displacement of people and natural disasters. In a globalized world, the Silk Road and its multidimensional influences have global ramifications and so the Symposium will be of great relevance for the entire UN community.

Besides the official opening and substantive segments, the Symposium will also have an Awards Ceremony, at which Nobel Prize laureate Aziz Sancar, renowned U.S. Turkic studies scholars Kemal Karpat and Edward Allworth will be recognized by the International Turkic Academy for their outstanding work.
