First-ever Women's Heart Health Summit Set to Drive National Action

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 11, 2016) - Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women worldwide? And that while it is on the decline among men, it is rising among women and the signs are different. These differences can impact diagnosis, treatment and prevention for a variety of cardiovascular conditions, including heart attacks. But this is largely under-recognized.

To address this growing public health issue, experts from around the world will gather in Ottawa for the first-ever Canadian Women's Heart Health Summit. Together, they will chart a path forward for an issue that has not received the attention it deserves.

The summit is organized by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute's Canadian Women's Heart Health Centre and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

WHAT: Canadian Women's Heart Health Summit

WHEN: April 14, (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.) and April 15, (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

WHERE: The Westin Ottawa, 11 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa

Educational sessions will address all areas of women's heart health, from awareness and prevention to treatment and sex-specific factors, while researchers will present findings in many different areas, from biomedical to epidemiological, clinical and population health. Inaugural Canadian Women's Heart Health Advocacy Awards will be given to an individual or group working to improve the heart health of women through advocacy, awareness, and support.

Perhaps most importantly, the Summit will create a venue to forge links and establish networks across the country through which women's heart health can be advanced.

Media opportunities: Media will be able to conduct interviews with leading researchers, women's heart health experts, survivors.
