Pittsburgh Corning Corporation Earns Prestigious National Insulation Association Safety Award

Company Earns Platinum Status Theodore H. Brodie Distinguished Safety Award

PITTSBURGH, April 26, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pittsburgh Corning Corporation has been named as a Platinum-level recipient of the 2015 Theodore H. Brodie Distinguished Safety Award in the manufacturing category granted by the National Insulation Association (NIA).  The NIA Safety Award, which recognizes companies that have established systemic safety programs to ensure the well-being of their employees and create safe working environments, is the only national award for outstanding safety performance in the mechanical insulation industry.  Pittsburgh Corning Corporation is one of three 2015 platinum level award winners, the highest level of excellence for the NIA safety award, in the manufacturing category.

Pittsburgh Corning Corporation is a global manufacturer of specialized cellular glass insulation and glass block products.  The Company’s FOAMGLAS® Insulation is used around the world on commercial building envelopes and in critical industrial processes, including piping for oil and gas production and tank base applications. The Company also produces premium glass block products and specialized architectural window systems for the residential and architectural markets in the United States.

The Company identifies safety as the first of its global values. Pittsburgh Corning has adopted the Management Based Safety (MBS) program, which provides a framework to strengthen its safety culture by introducing standard work and tools that help identify and correct unsafe conditions at its facilities.  The MBS program also extends into the field, where Pittsburgh Corning technical engineers and sales teams work at customers’ industrial and building jobsites.

The Pittsburgh Corning MBS program is based on two key principles:  that all occupational injuries are preventable, and it is the responsibility of management to create a safety environment and properly influence employees to work in a safe manner.  Pittsburgh Corning’s MBS program is modeled on the aviation industry, in which a pilot has ultimate accountability for the safety of his or her aircraft and uses simple tools to assure a safe flight.  The program includes a comprehensive set of tools—including scheduled safety tours and the find and fix program, a hazard-risk identification, recognition, and resolution process—used by Company leaders, supervisors and team leaders, and employees.

“At Pittsburgh Corning, workplace safety is a fundamental obligation of all employees. We want all of our people to return home from work in the same condition as when they departed for work,” said James R. Kane, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pittsburgh Corning Corporation. “Safety first is a global commitment, and we live the safety value daily across our entire enterprise, beginning with the global leadership team, continuing through site managers and supervisors and to all employees worldwide.  We are honored that Pittsburgh Corning has been recognized by the expert safety professionals at NIA for our team-based approach to safety as a crucial component of performance excellence.”

Pittsburgh Corning Corporation is the foremost global supplier of premium quality, cellular glass insulation, which offers a unique combination of properties that make it one of the highest performing insulation materials available.  In addition to its energy-conserving characteristics, FOAMGLAS® Insulation offers exceptional compressive strength, is impermeable to water in liquid or vapor form and will not burn. Billions of feet of FOAMGLAS® Insulation have been installed throughout the world in thousands of buildings and industrial plants.  Pittsburgh Corning offers a full range of FOAMGLAS® Insulation products and technical consulting services for building and industrial applications, including blocks in numerous densities, boards for various building applications, fabricated and tapered components, complex assemblies and a range of adhesives, coatings, clips and jackets that create complete insulation systems. The Company provides customer support on six continents.

NIA is the voice of the insulation industry, dedicated to keeping the commercial and industrial insulation industry up to date on the latest industry trends and technologies. The organization selects Theodore H. Brodie Distinguished Safety Award winners in four different business categories—manufacturers, contractors, distributors/fabricators and metal building laminators, and on four levels of excellence—Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. In an innovative judging process, the applicant companies are anonymous, evaluated on the basis of their overall safety program, means of communication and safety policy.  The award also is structured to help all applicants improve their safety programs through personalized recommendations in the NIA Safety Training Analysis Results (STAR) Report.

“NIA applauds our member companies that make safety a top priority,” said Michele M. Jones, NIA Executive Vice President/CEO.  “NIA’s goal is to help our members take their safety programs to the next level to help ensure a safe workplace for all employees. Two years ago, we were excited to double the number of Platinum winners over the previous year, and this year we are thrilled to set a new record with 28 Platinum winners.  We would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners.”
