Lexia Expands RAPID Assessment for Reading and Language Skills in K–12

Computer-adaptive assessment reduces time spent testing and provides immediate access to data and instructional strategies

BOSTON, June 20, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, Lexia Learning, a Rosetta Stone (NYSE: RST) Company, announced the expansion of Lexia’s RAPID Assessment™ to now support students in grades K–2, in addition to its existing support for students in grades 3–12. Developed in partnership with the Florida Center for Reading Research (FCRR), RAPID is a computer-adaptive assessment that screens for reading and language skills, identifies instructional needs and focus, and measures skill development and growth.

Lexia’s RAPID Assessment minimizes the amount of time spent testing, while maximizing the data provided to inform classroom instruction and school- or district-wide resource allocation. Based on research conducted by FCRR, RAPID measures the skills most predictive of reading success, and uses adaptive technology to quickly and precisely measure student performance. Administered up to three times a year, RAPID provides immediate access to actionable, norm-referenced data and reports, as well as connections to instructional strategies.

“RAPID’s ability to assess both language and reading skills across a wide skill range will help administrators make data-driven decisions to support student achievement, and help classroom teachers to identify and target students’ instructional needs quickly and efficiently,” said Lexia President Nick Gaehde. “With a focus on academic language, RAPID’s assessment data and instructional strategies support the needs of English Language Learners and better prepares all students for academic success in other disciplines.”

Lexia’s RAPID Assessment helps teachers and educational leaders promote reading success for all students by providing data on student skill development and growth across grades K-12. The use of adaptive technology provides a more time-efficient and engaging experience for students, with learners typically completing the assessment within one class period. For grades K-2, RAPID assesses foundational skills through both teacher- and student-led tasks, for administration one-on-one or in small groups. For grades 3-12, RAPID assesses complex knowledge, understanding, and application, and is group-administered in a classroom or computer lab.

“RAPID represents a forward-thinking approach to reading assessment,” continued Gaehde. “We are leading a paradigm shift on reading assessment by minimizing the amount of time spent testing, while gathering the most robust, predictive data to inform instructional strategies.”
