| WHAT: | Launching this October, this new initiative aims to promote positive parenting through providing resourceful information and programs under one roof. |
| WHY: | Life as new parents is challenging. Imagine the extra hurdles immigrant families face to access all the necessary parenting information due to unfamiliarity to the system, language, cultural differences, and time-stressed environment. Canada will continue to be an immigrant country when two-thirds of its population growth comes from immigration. For example, York Region is one of the fastest growing immigrant communities. By 2031, 55% of York Region’s residents will be immigrants, and 62% will be visible minorities. Many are at the age of 20 to 39. This cohort is likely starting families. A dedicated parenting platform like ParentConnectTM with resourceful information and relevant connections will help parents equip themselves with the knowledge and resources to give their child the valuable inheritance of a happy and healthy family through the power of positive parenting. |
| WHO: | Immigrant parents, City councillors from the York Region, school teachers, and community partners will also join the media event and be available for comments on site. Pre-school students will perform songs and dances to mark the launch of ParentConnectTM. Parenting Expo 2017 is the launch pad of ParentConnectTM, created by a passionate immigrant parent. Following the Expo will be a series of online and offline activities aiming at building a strong parent community for ongoing learning, sharing, and communication. Parenting ExpoTM will host over 50 exhibitors and expert speakers from the private and public sectors and is now accepting applications for exhibiting and sponsorships. Proceeds from the Expo will fund the operating costs of the event and the online hub. |
