24G SAS Data Storage Specification Development Complete; SCSI Trade Association Spotlights Technology at 2017 Flash Memory Summit

SAS experts in Booth #708 discuss how the architecture continues to add new features such as improved support for SSDs and takes a look forward to 24G SAS performance


SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 08, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Flash Memory Summit -- In a step towards satisfying the need for tremendous bandwidth as well as increasing IOPS requirements for big data analytics and scale-out storage in the datacenter, the SCSI Trade Association (STA) today announced that development of the 24G Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) specification is complete, has exited public review, and has been forwarded to the International Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) T10 committee for final publication.

“The completion of the specification signals that the technical details are stable, and 24G SAS OEM product development already underway can be completed and readied for market,” said Rick Kutcipal, president, STA and marketing manager, Broadcom Limited. “24G SAS end-user products are anticipated mid-2019 to early 2020. SAS has a strong legacy of being an excellent investment in light of its proven ability to support today's storage platforms as well as leveraging this technology to future storage needs.”

Comprised of SAS-4 and SPL-4, the 24G SAS specification is backward compatible with 12Gb/s and 6Gb/s SAS but will use a different encoding scheme than previous versions. The updated SAS Roadmap that clarifies SAS internal and external cabling solutions and SAS device to mid-plane interconnects is now available here.
