OpenDrives Partners with ARRI to Demonstrate Accelerated Video Processing Solution at IBC Show

Streamlining the Storage and Manipulation of ARRIRAW Media Files from Camera Ingest to Post-Production

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 07, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- OpenDrives today announced that its network-attached, all-flash storage array, Avalanche, will be featured in the ARRI booth (12.F21) at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC Show) in Amsterdam next week. This demonstration will showcase a new level of speed and efficiency in ARRIRAW media processing workflows. The new ARRIRAW Converter (ARC) complemented by OpenDrives data storage will achieve unprecedented debayer and video playback performance. “At OpenDrives, we are obsessed with reducing complexity and making it easier for industry professionals to focus on their craft,” said Zack Charney Cohen, Systems Engineer and Workflow Specialist at OpenDrives.

As the demand for higher resolution imagery continues to grow, content creators everywhere need to process premium formats quickly and efficiently, which is pushing the limits of storage technology. Given that most Academy Award nominated films in the past few years have been filmed on ALEXA series of cameras, ARRI is the industry standard for high-end filmmaking. ARRIRAW data produced from an ARRI ALEXA can be considered a digital version of a camera negative. It delivers uncompromised image quality and provides the highest achievable resolution, greater post-production flexibility, as well as raw data archiving. ARRIRAW images are uncompressed and therefore more challenging for processors and storage devices to handle. “Combined effort in fast processing, using the newest ARRIRAW SDK provided in the ARRI Partner Program and the fastest possible transfer and storage technology, lead to seamless workflows even with files from the ARRI flagship products ALEXA SXT or ALEXA 65, up to 6.5K,” said Henning Rädlein, Head of Digital Workflow Solutions at ARRI.

This enhanced workflow will enable entertainment companies to significantly decrease processing times and realize meaningful efficiency gains by processing raw media on a shared post-production storage tier. This makes files immediately available for VFX and editorial teams and eliminates the need for slower on-set processing and transfer solutions. In this demonstration, ARRIRAW will replay faster than real-time, a technical achievement that has only been seen with compressed formats in the past.

From camera ingest to post-production and beyond, OpenDrives continues to align with media technology innovators like ARRI to push the boundaries of content creation and deliver the industry’s best performance and efficiency across multiple workflows, allowing filmmakers to remove storage bottlenecks and work at the speed of creativity.
