Cars Are the Most Dangerous Place for Smart Devices, New Consumer Survey Reveals

2017 Puls survey explores the highest-risk scenarios for smart devices, and how broken phones affect our perception of others in work, love and beyond

Puls found that the number one most dangerous situation for smartphones is getting into or out of a car. More than one in three (34%) people break their phone this way, compared to one in five who have shattered their phones in the bathroom and one in four who have damaged a device on the job. And beware, moms & dads: nearly one in three parents (27%) have had a smartphone damaged by their children.

Broken phones also impact one’s romantic life. In fact, for those looking to impress on a first date: fixing up your device beforehand may be well worth it. Single women perceive a mate with a broken device to be clumsy (50%), not trying (14%) and/or likely to avoid picking up the bill (9%). On the other hand, single men expect a date carrying a broken device to be clumsy (43%), lazy (12%) and/or forgetful (12%).

In the workplace, Puls found that 50 percent of people are embarrassed to participate in a job interview with a broken phone. Another 39 percent are embarrassed to bring their cracked phone to a business meeting for fear of how their colleagues or boss will perceive them.

People feel a great deal of pressure when it comes to their mobile devices, which is why it’s not surprising that the majority of respondents (67%) would prefer to fix their phone within a few days of damage and 37% would address it immediately. Very few (3%) are willing to suffer the consequences and carry a broken device for months or years.
