Corizon Health Partners with Missouri Department of Corrections to Serve Incarcerated Veterans

Officials to Tour New Veterans Dorm at Moberly Correctional Center on Wednesday

BRENTWOOD, Tenn., Nov. 07, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- US military veterans account for an estimated 181,500 inmates in US prisons and jails, according to the most recent numbers available from the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics. Though it is a declining population – down 9 percent from the 206,500 total veterans incarcerated in 2004 – it is a population with special needs and challenges, such as higher rates of mental health disorders

Corizon Health partners with the Missouri Department of Corrections to offer comprehensive health services to state inmates, including behavioral health programs that help address some of the challenges faced by veterans, such as dedicated PTSD therapy groups.

MCC also is home to Pay it Forward, a program started in 2013 to develop and foster altruism and compassion within the correctional setting.

On Wednesday, November 8, 2017, both programs will be recognized when Pay it Forward holds its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 1:45 p.m., in the MCC gym. Representatives of veterans programs from throughout the state will be on hand to tour the veterans’ dorm and learn more about the DOC’s efforts to rehabilitate this unique population.
