Oklahoma Man Meets ADT Employees and First Responders Who Rescued Him

BOCA RATON, Fla., Jan. 10, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ADT, a leading provider of security and automation solutions for homes and businesses, celebrated one of its LifeSaver events today in Norman, Okla. where ADT Customer Gene Mendicki was reunited with rescuers who helped save him from a potentially deadly house fire.

The fire happened during the early morning of November 2 when Mendicki was inside his home with his three pet dogs.

“I didn’t realize there was fire until right before ADT called me,” said Mendicki. “After the call, I tried to escape through the laundry room and was immediately hit in the face with thick, black smoke. I barely made it out alive with my dogs.”

The fire started in the home’s garage where it quickly consumed a refrigerator which created intense heat and spewed toxic fumes. Within minutes, the home was destroyed.

“Afterwards, a firefighter explained the smoke was so toxic it would’ve quickly killed me and the heat of the fire would have instantly cremated me,” said Mendicki. “I am grateful for the quick call from ADT which notified the Norman Fire Department.”

To celebrate the successful outcome, ADT Vice President Eric Petrosevich presented LifeSaver Awards to five ADT employees whose jobs contributed to the save. Included was ADT Sales Rep Michael Morton who flew over a thousand miles from ADT’s Customer Care Center in Jacksonville, Fla. to see Mendicki for the first time.

“Meeting Mr. Mendicki was a thrill and the best day of my time so far at ADT,” said Morton. “I am glad I played a part in selling his security system which ultimately helped save his life.”

Petrosevich also awarded $5,000 to the Norman Fire Department which urged people to be extra diligent about fire safety during the winter months.

The National Fire Protection Association reports someone dies from a residential fire every 169 minutes. Monitored smoke detectors can help prevent these tragedies.
