Xplore Rugged Tablets Chosen as Official Scorekeeping Devices for NCAA Division I University in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas, March 06, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Xplore Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:XPLR) today announced that the athletics department of a major Texas university has chosen to standardize on Xplore Bobcat fully rugged tablets for the official scoring of its NCAA Division I competitions. The fully rugged tablets allow the school to accurately capture and analyze athlete performance during live competitions and immediately transmit all statistics and scores to the NCAA. The Bobcat rugged tablets are also used in the press box to inform the real-time reporting of athletic events by national sports and news outlets, along with the school’s affiliated television and online media channels.

“As an NCAA member, this university is obligated to maintain the highest level of fairness and integrity in its scorekeeping efforts during home competitions,” explained Jim Warden, vice president of Synergy Electronics, the Xplore Authorized Partner leading this project. “Unfortunately, the Microsoft Surface tablets previously selected for official scoring duties were failing frequently due to a number of issues. The other consumer-grade devices initially recruited for the job also proved inadequate due to their lack of ruggedness, insufficient computing capabilities and connectivity issues. As a result, the athletics department had to bear the responsibility of replacing, reimaging and redeploying the fragile devices. Along with the inconvenience of the repetitive down time to the student-athletes and NCAA, the university was incurring several unanticipated costs in maintaining the scorekeeping technology – all of which was unacceptable.”

This university started looking for a new scoring technology solution in February 2017 and enlisted the help of Synergy Electronics. The school’s basketball and volleyball teams were already using Xplore R12 rugged tablets at their scorekeeping tables with great success, so it was recommended that the customer consider transitioning to one of Xplore’s fully rugged tablet platforms for its outdoor sports.

After extensive field testing, the 10” outdoor-viewable, IP65-rated mobile computers from Xplore proved to be far more reliable than the consumer-grade tablets previously used by the university, especially during the live scoring of water sports such as swimming and rowing. According to the university's 30+ year IT manager, the Xplore rugged tablets also deliver a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than the consumer devices, while improving the user experience. The Bobcat’s added Kickstrap makes it easy to handle while standing for long periods of time, and the rugged tablet’s MIL-STD-810G-certified 5-foot drop rating provides additional assurance that the tablet will continue to work if it does accidentally slip out of a scorekeeper’s hand. These features are especially valued during track and field meets, for example, when the tablets are more prone to drops on hard surfaces and the details on the screen must be readable under direct sunlight exposure for long durations of time.

“We know that this customer has made a concerted effort in the last 12 months to improve their scoring systems,” added John Graff, vice president of marketing, Xplore. “We are very excited that, of all the mobile computer options on the market, this elite university has instilled its total confidence in Xplore rugged tablets as the official record-keeping technology for its entire athletics program.”
