Nexus Derechos Humanos Announces Federal Lawsuit Against DHS On Behalf of Asylum Seeker Who Was Unlawfully Separated From Her Seven Year Old Child.

Beata Mariana de Jesus Mejia-Mejia an Asylum Seeker, File a Lawsuit Against the Trump Administration After Her Child Was Taken From Her As She Sought Asylum in the US

Washingtion DC, June 19, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of Beata Mariana de Jesus Mejia-Mejia, an asylum seeker, by Nexus Derechos Humanos Attorneys, an Atlanta Human and Civil Rights Pro Bono Law firm funded by Nexus Services, Inc. Mejia, who turned herself into border patrol was separated from her seven-year-old son and was placed in detention until she secured an immigration bond. After her release, she was allowed briefly to speak to her obviously distressed son but was not given her son’s location or mental and physical health status. The child remains in custody while Mejia-Mejia seeks legal remedy. The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday against the Trump Administration.

Mario Williams, Mejia’s attorney and President of Nexus Derechos Humanos Attorneys Inc., said “Having the imprimatur of our national government on a system that is designed to divide children from their mothers and fathers not only violates human rights treaties and our constitution, but also destroys any semblance of moral authority amongst the world community…”

Mike Donovan, CEO of Nexus Services, Inc., who posted Beata’s bond charitably and funded the legal action, said, “There are humane ways to enforce our laws, however, the actions the US government have taken in the Mejia case are a shocking affront to our nation’s values and, indeed, the rule of law. Our law permits individuals to seek asylum in the US, and this policy punishes those seeking asylum by attacking children. It is reprehensible and must change.”

“History will judge us all on how we respond to this horror. I am proud to fund this action so that Beata can be reunited with her son, and others won’t have to face this hopeless situation.”

Attorneys with Nexus Derechos Humanos are seeking a Temporary Restraining Order, asking a court to immediately return Beata’s son to her custody.
