Canada Day 2018 at the Old Port of Montreal

A festive family celebration under the theme of the unity of our country.

Montreal, Quebec, CANADA

MONTREAL, June 29, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On July 1st, the annual Canada Day celebrations will take place at Jacques-Cartier Pier in Montreal, with a day of free family activities for all.

Rain or shine, the festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the announcement of the opening of the Canada Day celebrations, followed by an artistic performance of world percussion. At 12 p.m., the salute of honour will ring in the Old Port of Montreal with the traditional twenty-one gun salute to celebrate Canada's birthday. Between noon and 8:00 p.m., Canadians will have the opportunity to participate in many family activities including juggling and dance workshops, street hockey, giant babyfoot, inflatable games, percussion workshops, makeup station, and photos.

The swearing-in ceremony for new Canadians at 1:00 p.m., the national anthem, and the Canada Day cake service will be sure to enhance the festivities. To end this day in style, participants will be invited to join the main stage at 8:30 p.m. for the closing show by the Les Petites Voix du Plateau children's choir and four musical performances by Montreal artists H’sao, Bea Box by Joannie Labelle, Geraldina Mendez, and Nomad’Stones.

A unique show

Local artists with many different musical styles will join forces to offer a unique closing show to celebrate Canada Day. From opera to electro, from afro-fusion to angelic voices, we will all be united in highlighting music from near and far! The children's choir Les Petites Voix du Plateau, directed by choir conductor and pianist Roseline Blain, will be appreciated by all. DJ ECP and Bea Box, presented by Joannie Labelle, promise to form a duo that is just as improbable as it is festive! The African voices of the H'Sao formation will join the Venezuelan voice of soprano Geraldina Mendez to offer a revised version of the classic Summertime. The band Nomad'Stones, Radio-Canada’s new discovery in the world music category, will offer an acoustic, energetic and festive experience.

Canada - All United

This year, the theme of unity will be honoured. Canadians are united by many shared values, such as family, diversity and the dreams that we share. We are inspired by nature as well as our national and international achievements in both the arts and athletics. During these celebrations, we wish to showcase all of these elements that bring us together and make us a strong, proud, and committed community.

100 years after the First World War

This year, we are also celebrating the centennial of the end of the First World War. Canada Day will be an occasion to commemorate the armistice and the participation of Canadian troops in the Great War. It will also be a time to reiterate Canada's efforts in international peacekeeping operations and Canadians' commitment to peace. To this end, two young Montreal graffiti artists will be painting a giant mural for peace.

Canada Day is not only about fostering Canadians' sense of belonging and pride; it is about coming together to celebrate a close community, a big family.
