Navient employees support local nonprofit school supply efforts

Donation to Kids R First will help purchase supplies for 1,150 students

RESTON, Va., July 12, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Students will return to school with new supplies thanks to Kids R First, an all-volunteer nonprofit committed to helping kids in need. The organization has invited Navient employees, for a fifth year, to help fill bulk orders for schools receiving the supplies.

The Navient Foundation, the company’s philanthropic fund, donated $7,500 to the program to support the purchase of school supplies for 1,150 students.

“Navient’s donation will provide students with the tools they need to succeed in school,” said Susan Ungerer, president and CEO, Kids R First. “Many of these students' parents are not financially able to purchase the required school supplies. With the support of Navient, our local Walmart and Guernsey, the regional office supply company, we are able to purchase four dollars of quality supplies for a buck.”

Last year, 45 Navient employees volunteered to fill bulk orders of supplies for specific schools.

“I am extremely proud to be a Navient employee,” said Kathryn Drosky, volunteer. “I am pleased to be able to volunteer with such a worthwhile cause to help students in the community succeed in their academics by having the school supplies they need. This event is a great team building experience. We are able to get to know and participate in the local community while bonding with co-workers.”

Since opening in 1998, Kids R First has served more than 360,500 kids in Northern Virginia. The nonprofit provides school supplies to students who receive free or reduced priced meals at their school.
