Atlas Growers ™ Forms Advisory Board


EDMONTON, Alberta, Aug. 28, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ATLAS GROWERS LTD. (“Atlas” or the “Company”), a wholly owned subsidiary of Atlas Biotechnologies Inc., is pleased to announce the appointment of an initial four individuals to the Company’s new Advisory Board. The Atlas Advisory Board was formed to provide management and the Atlas Board of Directors with strategic advice and expertise to help accelerate growth, manage risk and enhance operational performance.

The Advisory Board will have skills in a range of matters related to medical R&D, regulation, import / export, and international law, and will aid in advancing Atlas in its’ goal of becoming a global leader in the production of medicinal cannabis at its purpose-built facility located near Edmonton, Alberta. Current appointees to the Advisory Board include Ms. Elan MacDonald, Mr. Doug Peterson, Dr. Katia Tonkin and Mr. Mike Alikhan.

Elan MacDonald, ICD.D

Ms. Elan MacDonald is the President and Chief Executive Officer of IMPACT Consulting, an Alberta-based public affairs firm that works with local, national and multi-national corporations to sustain and grow their businesses by navigating government, policy development, the regulatory and legislative processes, and the shifting political, social and economic landscapes. Ms. MacDonald is a director on the boards of Edmonton Global and the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, where she is also a member of the Chamber’s Policy Committee and chairs the Government Relations Committee.  Ms. MacDonald also serves on NorQuest College’s 1000 Women Advisory Committee. MacDonald has a long history in Alberta politics serving as Deputy Chief of Staff and political advisor to two Alberta premiers, and as a political advisor to cabinet ministers. 

Douglas Peterson

Mr. Douglas Peterson currently sits as a director and general counsel for several companies in the environmental, manufacturing, and technology sectors. Mr. Peterson has worked in private practice specializing in corporate commercial law with an emphasis on international business transactions and has extensive experience in international and regulatory matters, including commercial law, intellectual property law, and international finance trade. Mr. Peterson’s legal experience also covers domestic and international contracts, employment agreements, and financial and legal restructuring. Mr. Peterson is a member of the Alberta Bar and the British Columbia Bar, speaks Japanese, and is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Law of the University of Niigata in Japan. Mr. Peterson is an instructor at both the School of Business and the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta, where he lectures on contracts, corporate and international law, international business transactions, and Asia-Pacific Rim law. Mr. Peterson has won several teaching awards at the University of Alberta, including most recently, the Pringle/Royal Sessional Teaching Excellence Award.

Dr. Katia Tonkin

Dr. Katia Tonkin is a professor at the University of Alberta in the Department of Oncology and has extensive experience in Phase 1, 2 and 3 clinical trials in Oncology. Dr. Tonkin has been working as a consultant at a cannabis clinic since April 2017, and has completed numerous presentations on cannabis to health professionals. Dr. Tonkin has extensive clinical teaching and administrative experience, first in London, Ontario and for 20 years at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Alberta. Dr. Tonkin is widely published with a number of research papers, abstracts, book chapters and an oncology book in its second edition. Dr. Tonkin received her MBBS from the Medical School Kings College, London, UK, her master’s Degree in laboratory-based Oncology from Royal Marsden Hospital, and has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons UK and the College of Physicians Canada with specialist certification in Medical Oncology. 

Mike Alikhan

Mr. Mike Alikhan brings 25 years of experience specializing in business transformation, technology-enabled change and co-creation with leadership teams focusing on retailers and brands. In his senior roles with major consultancies and systems integrators, Mr. Alikhan has been responsible for driving digital strategies and roadmaps aligned to business vision, exploiting technologies and delivering results. Mr. Alikhan is a strong advocate of business-capability, customer centered approaches and innovation supporting new business models.

Atlas is based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Atlas Biotechnologies Inc. Atlas has applied for, and expects to receive in the second half of 2018, its cultivation and sales licenses under Health Canada’s ACMPR. Atlas’ initial purpose-built 38,000 square foot facility is nearing completion and will have the capacity to produce approximately 5,000 kg of dried cannabis annually as well as to refine cannabis concentrates. Further, the 160-acre Atlas site could allow for future expansion of up to 12,000,000 square feet of production capacity.
