Scientists, health professionals to gather in Nashville for the world’s largest obesity conference

The Obesity Society (TOS), the leading organization of scientists and health professionals devoted to understanding and reversing the epidemic of obesity and its adverse health, economic and societal effects, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the leading organization for bariatric and metabolic surgeons and integrated health professionals, collaborate to host ObesityWeek 2018.



WHAT

ObesityWeek is the largest international conference on obesity. Nearly 5,000 leading scientists, clinicians, surgeons, health care professionals and policymakers will gather for the sixth annual ObesityWeek conference. Media representatives will have the opportunity to learn about the future of obesity research and treatment with more than 100 scientific sessions and hundreds of expert speakers on new and emerging obesity treatment, the science of weight loss, innovative prevention strategies, cutting-edge metabolic surgery techniques and the genetics of obesity.

  • Tuesday, Nov. 13, 8 a.m.: TOS/ASMBS Opening Session: Getting to the Heart of the Matter
    • Keynote speaker Steven E. Nissen, MD, will discuss the connection between obesity and heart disease. Dr. Nissen is Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. In 2006-2007, he served as President of the American College of Cardiology, the professional society representing American cardiologists.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 14, 10:30 a.m.TOS/ASN Joint George L. Blackburn, MD, PhD, Nutrition and Metabolism Symposium: Science Driving the Media in Nutrition Research—What Will It Take?
    • Learn from the latest data published in The Journal of the American Medical Association and The New England Journal of Medicine authored by leaders in the field of nutrition and metabolism how macronutrient content of the diet affects weight loss, inflammation, and insulin sensitivity during weight loss and what genetic components, if any, affect the results.
