How to find a Certified Humane® turkey this Thanksgiving – and what to do when you don’t

Middleburg, VA, Oct. 01, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Celebrate Thanksgiving this year with a Certified Humane® turkey, the centerpiece of a new Canadian holiday tradition. Buying a Certified Humane® turkey is something that consumers have only been able to do in Canada during this past decade.

What makes a turkey Certified Humane®?

Certified Humane® turkeys are raised under Humane Farm Animal Care’s (HFAC) strict Animal Care Standards for the humane treatment of farm animals. Adele Douglass, HFAC's Chief Executive Officer, says “For turkeys, this means they must receive a nutritious diet free of antibiotics or hormones. They must be raised with adequate shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behaviors such as flapping wings, moving around freely and perching above ground at night."

Douglass says HFAC’s mission is to end factory farming by creating consumer demand for humanely-raised meat and poultry. Consumers can purchase a Certified Humane® turkey at major supermarkets in Vancouver including Choices Market, Nesters Market, Queensland Market, Stong's Markets and Whole Foods.

In other provinces, however, consumers who care about the treatment of farm animals should visit HFAC’s Take Action page to download a grocer product letter to request Certified Humane® turkeys and other Certified Humane® products be carried in their stores.

To find out a store near you that carries Certified Humane® turkeys and other products, visit www.certifiedhumane.org or download the free Certified Humane® App from the Mobile App store, which offers English and French language options.
