PetSmart releases additional data from its inaugural Pet Poll, revealing which province is most likely to dress up their pet
BURLINGTON, Ontario, Oct. 26, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With Halloween just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to get pets ready to enjoy a spooktacular night with the family. According to PetSmart’s nationwide Pet Poll conducted by DART Insights, Quebec dog owners and B.C. cat owners are more likely than any other province in Canada to dress up their pet and go to a pet-person party. Across Canada, male pet owners are the most likely to participate and take their pet out for a night on the town. PetSmart wants to bring pet parents closer to their pets this Halloween, and with an assortment of costumes and accessories, toys and treats, there are plenty of ways to include them in the spooky festivities.
PetSmart has costumes to inspire fun for all pets this Halloween. Among the most popular pet costumes this year are a pumpkin, hot dog, sushi, devil and lion. New costume arrivals include a mermaid, shark and teddy bear. Costumes for small pets, like guinea pigs and hamsters, remain popular with mermaid, unicorn and superhero options. Accessories like the Thrills and Chills™ Happy Halloween Bandana or a pumpkin bow tie collar are excellent alternatives for pets who don’t care for full-body costumes.
Dogs and cats alike are sure to love this year’s Halloween toy and treat collection featuring classic or timeless characters like mummies, monsters and skeletons. Finding your pet’s inner superhero
PetSmart’s Pet Poll asked 1,600 pet parents across Canada what superpower they’d want their pet to have. Dog and cat owners agreed healing would be the preferred power at 29 per cent (31 per cent dog owners and 28 per cent cat owners). Mind-reading placed second at 27 per cent (29 per cent dog owners and 26 per cent cat owners) and speed placed third at 14 per cent (15 per cent dog owners and 12 per cent cat owners).
To help your pet bring their superpowers to life, PetSmart offers a number of superhero costumes. From Captain America to Wonder Woman, Spiderman, Batman and Superman, pets can let their true superhero alter egos out this Halloween.
PetSmart’s Pet Poll also revealed the following insights about Canadian pet parents:
- Healing Paws: Healing is the most popular pet power across Canada. Quebec, more than any other Canadian province, agreed that healing would be their pet’s superhero power (35 per cent cat owners and 42 per cent dog owners).
- Nothing is purrivate: Dog and cat owners in Atlantic Canada are divided on mind-reading abilities: thirty-seven per cent of cat owners would want their pet to have mind-reading abilities (the highest response nationwide), while 26 per cent of dog owners would want their dog to have mind-reading abilities (the lowest response nationwide).
- Now you see me, now you don’t: Pet owners in Saskatchewan and Manitoba want their pet to either have speed (17 per cent) or invisibility (16 per cent) powers - the highest response rates across Canada.
- Brrr…it’s cold: It’s no surprise the ability to freeze things is the least popular superhero power. Only one per cent of all Canadian pet owners would want their pet to have that power.

Survey Methodology
A total of 1,600 pet owners were surveyed—800 dog owners and 800 cat owners. Using a Bayesian Credibility Interval, the national combined pet owner’s results are deemed to be accurate to +/- 2.8%, 19 times out of 20; dog and cat owners weighted to 800 sample each are deemed to be accurate to +/- 4.0, 19 times out of 20.
