ATLANTA, Dec. 05, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, the Spirit of Ramanujan STEM Talent Initiative (SOR) is pleased to announce two more recipients of the 2019 Templeton–Ramanujan Fellowship: Sinar Zaito (11, Beirut, Lebanon) and Anna Krokhine (15, Toronto, Canada). SOR strives to find undiscovered geniuses around the world. Honoring the legacy of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan the initiative supports emerging engineers, mathematicians, and scientists who lack traditional institutional support through financial grants and mentorship opportunities.
“Anna and Sinar are dynamos,” said Ken Ono, the director of the Spirit of Ramanujan and the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Mathematics at Emory University. “Both are emerging as young leaders in mathematics in their own right, and it’s a pleasure to give them access to the highest level of training that is available to gifted math students.”
Anna is an 11th grader at the University of Toronto Schools, where she completed its mathematics curriculum (including AP courses) at 14. Having studied mathematics on her own, she plans to pursue a career in the field. Following her passion for combinatorics and graph theory, Anna is participating in research projects and taking a graph theory course at the University of Toronto. She has also excelled in competitions. As part of this year’s Team Canada for the European Girls Mathematical Olympiad, she earned a bronze medal while being one of the youngest participants. Anna has yet to choose where she will use her Spirit of Ramanujan Templeton–Ramanujan Fellowship.
Sinar is a 6th grader in Lebanon who has completed all the mathematics courses available at his local school. He is now studying graduate-level mathematics courses and intends to pursue a career in the mathematical sciences. Sinar will use his Templeton–Ramanujan Fellowship to support his research with Professor Wissam Raji, Chairman of the Department of Mathematics at the American University of Beirut. Sinar’s award also provides three years of Art of Problem Solving courses and $1,000 USD in STEM books.

The Spirit of Ramanujan STEM Talent Initiative was founded in 2016 by Ken Ono of Emory University. The priority submission deadline is December 31, 2018, with rolling admission until May 30, 2019.
