Craig Hospital Named the 2019 Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Education Site of Excellence by Colorado State University

Englewood, Colo. , April 24, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Craig Hospital, a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital for people who have sustained spinal cord and/or brain injuries, was named the Colorado State University (CSU) Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Education Site of Excellence for 2019. The hospital was chosen based on criteria identified by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) for evaluating fieldwork sites and based on feedback from the University’s Department of Occupational Therapy (OT) students and faculty.

The honor was presented to Craig during the 18th Annual CSU OT Knowledge Exchange event on April 19 and coincides with National Occupational Therapy Month.

Over the past 20 years, Craig Hospital has brought in 85 students for fieldwork experience in both inpatient and outpatient rehab, as well as in assistive technology.

“The feedback we hear from students and our faculty who have been involved with Craig has been exemplary, and we are proud to name them as our Site of Excellence this year,” said Patricia Stutz-Tanenbaum, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA, Assistant Professor and Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, CSU Occupational Therapy Department.

Some of the criteria for the designation included Craig’s history of providing consistent fieldwork education to occupational therapy students, collaboration with academic institutions, the delivery of ethical and occupation-centered practice, staff with working knowledge and use of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, and consistent positive evaluations from students. Each year, Occupational Therapists and patients from Craig also visit CSU to present lectures and host lab sessions for students.

“At Craig, we place a priority on teaching prospective therapists the unique ways we approach rehabilitation for those with spinal cord or brain injury,” said Ellen Severe, OTR/L, Director of Occupational Therapy at Craig. “We’re incredibly honored to receive this recognition and aim to influence even more students in the years to come.”
