AUTONOMOUS TICKETING – THE KEY TO THE MOBILITY OF TOMORROW

AIT presents basis for innovative ticketing solution at UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Stockholm

Digital communication and IoT (Internet of Things) have become the cornerstones of today’s society. The use of personal devices such as smartphones and their diverse applications contribute significantly to the simplification of our daily routines. The providers of these services benefit from unimaginable new possibilities in optimising their own services. This also results in completely new service potentialities and business models for operators and users of local and long-distance public transport.

Be-In-Be-Out-Ticketing via Smartphone

If you use public transport, it is necessary to buy a ticket at ticket counters, vending machines or on the Internet. Meanwhile, so-called Be-In/Be-Out or Check-In/Be-Out solutions are also being used. The interaction of users, for example on a smartphone, or high investments in infrastructure would still be required. Operators must equip both their fleet and the stop areas with appropriate hardware such as beacons, sensors or other passenger detection systems.

Autonomous ticketing of the next generation requires neither operator infrastructure nor active user interaction. It is smartphone-based and works by reliably collecting information about the route, interchange points and means of transport used. With MODE, the software solution from AIT, this data can be captured automatically and precisely in the background.

What are the advantages of such a solution for public transport operators?

  • Savings on station and/or vehicle hardware, such as ticket vending machines, ticket validators, Bluetooth or RFID beacons
  • Savings on costly passenger counts to optimise service performance
  • Possibility of controlling the mobility behaviour of customers according to tariffs
  • Transparent allocation of the market shares of different operators within a transport network

How do passengers benefit from autonomous ticketing?

  • No need to buy tickets at station and/or vehicle ticket machines
  • No need to purchase different tickets from different transport operators
  • No interaction with smartphone required at start and end of trip (Be-In/Be-Out)
  • Use of the existing transport infrastructure at any time, as, when and where you like

MODE – the AIT software solution for the collection of different transport modes

  • MODE is based on many years of research and development

In addition to GNSS and other location detection functions, smartphones provide sensor-based acceleration data and can thus identify different means of transport. Together with GIS data, timetables and real-time information about public transport systems, MODE makes an autonomous ticketing solution possible without the need for additional infrastructure or user interaction.

  • Eight different means of transport

MODE distinguishes between eight different means of transport: Bike, motorcycle, car, bus, tram, subway, train and walking. The smartphone-based data is transmitted to a server where the MODE algorithm generates reliable and detailed travel information.

  • MODE is easy to integrate

The software components of MODE (client and back-end) can be easily integrated into various existing ticketing applications and platforms, taking into account specific customer requirements and interfaces. This makes MODE the ideal basis for autonomous ticketing solutions for operators of public transport systems and mobility providers.

Presentation at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Stockholm

The UITP Global Public Transport Summit will take place in Stockholm from 9 to 12 June. The AIT Center for Mobility Systems is represented with a booth at this leading international trade fair for public transport and will present solutions for Autonomous Ticketing and other innovative solutions from mobility research.
