Celebrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in The Palm Beaches during Black History Month

Florida’s Cultural Capital® spotlights Black voices with events, exhibitions and other programming


LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla., Feb. 01, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Every February, the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County is committed to showcasing diverse voices and programming in the cultural sector. Nationwide, Black History Month is a special moment in time to honor, celebrate and amplify the contributions, cultures, and achievements of Black Americans. 

With a core focus on education and hands-on creativity, cultural organizations in The Palm Beaches are offering visitors and residents a chance to enjoy several events and exhibitions that celebrate Black change-makers, artists, and influencers.   • Arts Garage (Delray Beach): Three of the most respected nonprofit organizations in Delray Beach – Arts Garage, Spady Cultural Heritage Museum and the Community Redevelopment Agency of Delray Beach – are collaborating to present an Authors Speak Series called “The Impact of Race on American Society.” This series will inspire enlightening conversations with writers who have cultivated a perspective on Black cultural awareness through research and personal experiences. The first event in the series will take place on Feb. 10 with author Leslie Gray Streeter, where she will discuss widowhood through the prism of race, mixed marriage, and aging. Admission is free.   • Historical Society of Palm Beach County / Richard & Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum (West Palm Beach): 
    • Now through Feb. 26, the Richard & Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum will honor the history of African Americans with the exhibition, “More Than a Game: Champions in the Midst of Desegregation.” This exhibit showcases the bravery of the 1968 Roosevelt High School basketball team – the first all-Black school and the first team from Palm Beach County to win a Florida high school basketball championship.     • On Feb. 9, Kitty Oliver, PhD, creator of the cross-cultural Race and Change Initiative, will discuss her book, Multicolored Memories of a Black Southern Girl. Visit the website for more information. 
  • Norton Museum of Art (West Palm Beach): Every Saturday in February, the Museum will host the family-friendly event, BAM! Black Arts Movement. This event is for children ages 5-12, and their accompanying grown-ups, to participate in a thematic tour, followed by a related art workshop. Families will be able to explore works by African American artists in the Norton collection. Registration is required, so please visit norton.org/familystudio to book ahead of time.
  • The Square (West Palm Beach): Throughout the month of February, The Square’s one-of-a-kind bookstore, Rohi’s Readery, will have an ongoing schedule of events to celebrate Black History Month called, “Stories of Black Excellence, Brilliance, and Joy: Fostering Pride through Children's Literature.” On Feb. 5, visitors can enjoy an afternoon exploring the Market at The Square featuring Black-owned businesses, live music workshops about fostering pride through the infusion of African and African American literacies, and panel discussions discussing social justice. 
  • West Palm Beach: Presented by All About Us & Royal Healings, enjoy a family-friendly Community Blackout Market on Feb. 19 from 1-6 p.m. and celebrate Black excellence! At this free community celebration, guests will enjoy delicious food, live performances by local artists and opportunities to shop for items created by local vendors. The Cultural Council for Palm Beach County is the official support agency for arts and culture in The Palm Beaches, Florida’s Cultural Capital®. Headquartered in the historic Robert M.
