The introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors in the market have shown to be effective in wide range of cancers and works by restoring the functionality of tumor specific T-cells to combat cancerous cells. Owing to its high expression in multiple cancer types, researchers suggested targeting LAG-3 as an alternative approach in the management of cancer. Recently in 2022, US FDA has granted approval to the fixed-dose combination of relatlimab (LAG-3 inhibitor) plus nivolumab for the treatment of adult and pediatric patients who are 12 years of age or older and who have unresectable or metastatic melanoma. The combination is sold under the trade name Opdualag and is marketed by Bristol Myers Squibb. The rapid approval of LAG-3 represents major breakthrough in immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy.
