The 47,936 total U.S. bankruptcy filings in August 2025 increased 6 percent from the August 2024 total of 45,177.

July continues to see strong demand from both consumers and businesses seeking bankruptcy protection; filings up 26 percent.

Total bankruptcy filings were 276,126 during the first six months of 2025, a 10 percent increase from the same period a year ago.

Total Commercial Bankruptcy Filings Up 8 Percent

The 9 percent increase in total bankruptcy filings in April 2025 reflects the mounting strain on households, elevated prices, and higher borrowing costs.

Commercial chapter 11 bankruptcy filings increased 20 percent in March 2025, with filings climbing to 733 from the 611 filings registered in March 2024.

“The overall filing volume trend waned in February, primarily due to fewer filing days and a typical trend of filings after tax return season,” Epiq said.
