Scientists Discover Africa’s Highest-Living Frog on Mount Kilimanjaro

In February 2025, Altezza Travel and the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) carried out a joint expedition to study frog populations at high altitudes on Mount Kilimanjaro. The team explored rivers between 3,500 and 4,000 meters (11,500–13,100 ft) and collected DNA samples from amphibians found at nearly 4,000 meters — far above the species' previously known limit. The analysis confirmed the frogs are Amietia wittei, a species once thought unable to survive above 3,000 meters (9,800 ft). This finding significantly expands the known ecological range of the species and highlights its resilience to cold, low-oxygen conditions. The logistics of the expedition were organized by Altezza Travel, while the research was supported by renowned herpetologist Professor Alan Channing. It also revealed critical threats to the frogs’ habitat, including water pollution and climate-related stream loss.
