Logicon Wins U.S. Air Force Contract to Support Imaging, High-Energy Lasers

HERNDON, Va., July 31, 2000 (PRIMEZONE) -- Logicon Inc., a Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) company, has received a five-year, $19.8 million contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory's Directed Energy Directorate for the Advanced Laser Imaging Analysis Support (ALIAS) program.

As the principal contractor, Logicon will provide technical support to the Directorate in developing and testing high-energy lasers and imaging technology. Analytical and experimental work includes developing and conducting advanced imaging experiments as well as supporting advanced lasers systems development, integration, test and data reduction.

"This is an especially significant win in that we will be supporting a primary new technology thrust for the Air Force as high-energy lasers move from the laboratory to the battlefield," said Dr. Charles Stebbins, vice president-Research and Development Applications, Logicon. "By securing this contract, we continue to be a leader in imaging and laser systems."

Various applications in the battlefield such as suppression of enemy air defenses, aircraft self protection, detection of chemical and biological agents, covert communications and illumination of targets to guide smart bombs are currently being evaluated.

Logicon's Advanced Technology unit, headquartered in San Pedro, Calif., will lead the contracting team. Work on the program will be performed at the Phillips site and Starfire Optical Range, Albuquerque, N.M., and the Air Force Maui Optical Station, Hawaii.

The ALIAS contract is the most recent in a series of related technical support contracts for Logicon during the past 24 years. The Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy Directorate is a principal Department of Defense research organization working on high-power lasers, high-energy microwaves and other directed energy technologies. Since 1976, Logicon has been involved in every major laser program that the Directorate and its predecessors have conducted.

"Not only is our expertise in imaging and laser systems an asset to the Directorate, our experience base and knowledge of the agency's history of its various programs afford us the opportunity to quickly develop viable solutions to the many challenges the Directorate faces," said Dr. Burke Nelson, program manager, Logicon, who has managed a series of Logicon contracts for the Directorate since 1985.
