Nokia has announced the Professional Portal, a unique data-access solution for TETRA networks. The Nokia Professional Portal provides authorized public-safety field units with remote real-time access to mission-critical data and information. Users can access the data with TETRA WAP terminals, as well as via Web browsers in PCs and PDAs.
The solution will be available to public safety projects and service providers during the second quarter 2002.
The Nokia Professional Portal solution is based on open and standardized technologies and draws upon Nokia's long experience in IP and WAP technology. The solution provides a platform for attractive applications, because it includes data bearer services such as inter-switch TETRA IP packet data, rapid WAP and short data services. It uses Nokia products such as the Nokia Activ Server, TETRA WAP Push Adaptation and the Nokia Communication Interface Server, which have open application programming interfaces.
Besides supporting the new, user-friendly Nokia THR850 terminal with WAP and IP functionalities, the Nokia Professional Portal solution also supports access via Web browsers in PCs and PDAs.
The Nokia Professional Portal brings significant efficiency and safety benefits to law enforcement, fire and rescue, frontier guard or other public-safety units by allowing them to find critical information faster. With the Nokia Professional Portal, for example, police can quickly access databases of stolen property or car registration numbers. Data are encrypted, satisfying security requirements.
Applications have been made in collaboration with key public-safety application vendors. The solution's open technologies and application interfaces can be provided to application developers, speeding up application deployment.
The Nokia Professional Portal allows centralized and flexible installation and maintenance. Applications are installed centrally in the network, with no need to update applications in every field computer.
