German Weather Service places significant order with Vaisala

The Vaisala Group has received a significant order from the German
Weather Service, Deutscher Wetterdienst. Vaisala will deliver them a
network of radar wind profilers during the years 2003 - 2005. The
contract is valued at more than EUR 5 million.

"This network is an important breakthrough in the remote sensing
business area. Remote sensing using radar wind profiler technology has
earlier been used mainly for research purposes. The German Weather
Service has now decided to take it into operational use. We anticipate
this to be a start of a trend also in other parts of Europe and
eventually in other parts of the world," states Pekka Ketonen, CEO and
President of Vaisala.

The network to be delivered will be used for remote monitoring of the
atmosphere. It will supplement the existing networks of radiosondes,
satellite sensors and aircraft observations by providing continuous
data of wind and temperature profiles for weather analysis and
forecasting models.

The radar wind profiler network to be implemented is the high range
version (up to 16 km) for tropospheric profiling. It uses the same
technology as the lower range boundary layer wind profilers, which
have been installed widely for many years. The boundary layer
profilers are vital components in support of air quality, aviation and
mesoscale forecasting operations. Whereas the tropospheric radar wind
profilers are used as supplementary equipment for high end upper air
observations.

The Vaisala Group is a successful international technology company
that develops and manufactures electronic measurement systems and
equipment for meteorology, environmental sciences, traffic safety and
industry. Vaisala employs over 1,200 professionals and achieved net
sales of EUR 183.5 million in 2001. Vaisala serves customers
throughout the world. In 2001, exports accounted for 96% of net sales.
