Harris Enhances Competitive Position by Automating Requirements Management; Company Implements Telelogic DOORS on 100 Projects to Enhance Communication, Collaboration and Overall Quality

MALMO, Sweden and IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 25, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Telelogic, (Stockholm:TLOG), the leading global provider of solutions for advanced systems and software development, today announced that Harris Corporation has improved its project management by leveraging the power of Telelogic DOORS.

"We're impressed with the tool," said Bruce Barton, a systems engineer in the Harris Corporation's Government Communications Systems Division (GCSD). "The time needed to generate specifications and the time to analyze requirements has been significantly reduced but yet overall quality has been significantly improved," explained Barton. Barton helped select DOORS(R) after an exhaustive nine-month review period.

"Plus, use of DOORS is growing," he added. "And from a systems engineering view, that's a good thing."

Harris GCSD, a near billion-dollar-a-year division of Harris based in Melbourne, Florida, handles most of the in-house development to meet the company's IT needs, plus it's primary job: developing state-of-the-art, highly reliable communications and information systems that solve the mission-critical communications challenges of its military and government customers.

By nature, any contract-driven business needs to have a way to manage customer requirements. And Harris was no different. For years, they made do with a homegrown system using a combination of spreadsheets, documents and a system for numbering paragraphs. But it was tedious to maintain and could be difficult to determine the impact of change.

"No customer delivers their specifications and goes away. Requirements constantly change and evolve over time," Barton explained. To assess the impact of a customer change request (and be paid accordingly), or to determine the status of requirements, they had to troll through each requirements document, paragraph by paragraph.

"We did it for years without DOORS, but we had to do it all manually," Barton said. "We couldn't avoid doing it. So it was a matter of how much time it would take to maintain the requirements and keep them consistent."

Since first implementing DOORS several years ago, GCSD has further refined their development lifecycle management process by automatically flowing requirements down from the top-level customer requirements. Coupled with strict controls over how requirements can be modified (and by whom), they've improved the quality of their requirements and their projects.

"We're deriving requirements from the customer on one side, and verifying that we're satisfying those requirements on the other side," Barton said. "We've set up views to trace links to child requirements, and also to look for requirements with no parents. This ensures we cover all the requirements and don't introduce any new ones. Before, we would never know if we were over-designing or under-designing.

"Best of all, we've been able to flow down requirements without any special customizations. We've done this with DOORS completely out-of- the-box," Barton added. "It was a simple implementation."

GCSD is using DOORS for more than 100 projects and uses it to collaborate with customers and partners. GCSD has standardized on DOORS.

"Harris develops mission-critical systems to exacting government requirements. To continue its success in today's competitive market, it is important that they satisfy their customer and do it in the most efficient way possible," said Scott Raskin, president of Telelogic Americas & Asia.

"By automating and simplifying requirements management with Telelogic DOORS, Harris has been able to maintain and enhance its competitive position through savings in time and gains in quality," Raskin said.
