`War and Remembrance' -- Civil war and some recollections in the new book by Charles Gist

MELBOURNE, Ark., Nov. 5, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Charles Gist's "The Other Side of the River" (now available through 1stBooks Library) is a nostalgic and wonderful novel about the seriousness of war and the possible consequences of lies and deceit. It is also a magnificent depiction of how families should be and how family members should treat each other at all times -- whether in moments of adversity or times of happiness.

"The Other Side of the River" is a literary piece that pictures clean family fun and enjoyment with a different historical twist. An excerpt reads: "Lige took a deep breath as he wiped his mouth on his shirtsleeve. `Mighty fine meal. As I was saying, some folks say I'm crazy. Could be maybe they're right. Don't matter much one way or the other, anyway' ... Been prospecting for gold. Ain't found the motherlode yet, but one of these day's me and Nellie, we are gonna strike it rich. That's Nellie right over there.' He pointed toward the mule and she brayed as if she knew that he was talking about her."

Written in a way that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike, "The Other Side of the River" is intriguing, informative and humorous, as it will get readers to think about families and the importance of all heritages. When reading the book, two words will readily come to the readers' mind: wholesome fun. In addition, the book is replete with such sheer sensitivity that readers can't help but look back at their own families and the wonderful times that have been spent with them. Absorbing this narrative is like walking down memory lane.

Born in northeast Arkansas, Charles Gist moved to Florida during his first year of school. He has always been interested in history, especially Civil War history. From this interest stemmed a short career as a Civil War re-enactor with Company E 7th Florida, a membership with the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the authorship of a book of Civil War poetry, from the southern point of view, of course. He also has been working on his family tree for the last twenty years. Gist graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1970. An industrial electrician by trade, he is the father of three boys and two girls and presently has five grandchildren. Gist currently resides in Melbourne, Ark.
