Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968, Special Olympics is the world's largest program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with mental disabilities, inspiring greatness in more than a million athletes worldwide.
Because of Special Olympics, the world has been able to witness the courage, character, dedication and dignity of people who had once been considered incapable of contributing to society. The program offers year-round sports training and competition in 23 individual and team sports. Lessons learned in sports translate into competence and success in school, at the workplace, and in the community.
