NCC to build road tunnel on Faeroe Islands for SEK 270 million

SOLNA, Sweden, Nov. 13, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- NCC has been commissioned by Nordoyatunnilin, which is owned by the Government of the Faeroe Islands, to build a road tunnel between two of the Faeroe Islands. In total, this construction assignment is worth SEK 316 million, of which NCC's share is approximately SEK 270 million.

The road tunnel will be a 6.2 kilometers long underwater tunnel and serve as a link between the most northerly islands, Eysturoy and Bordoy, where the town of Klaksvig is located. The project includes the blasting of 420,000 cubic meters of rock.

Work will commence immediately and the road tunnel is scheduled for completion in August 2006.

NCC was previously assigned to build the Vagar Tunnel, the Faeroe Islands' first underwater tunnel, which connects Vagar, the island where the Faeroes' only airport is located, with Streymoy, the island where the capital city Torshavn is located. This tunnel started to be built in autumn 2000 and was handed over to the customer in January this year, nearly half a year ahead of schedule.

NCC International Denmark and NCC Construction Norway will conduct the assignment in cooperation with local Faeroe Island contractors.
