EMS Satellite Networks Obtains SatLabs DVB-RCS Certification of Compliance

ATLANTA, Oct. 18, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- EMS Satellite Networks, a division of EMS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ELMG), announced today that it has obtained a DVB-RCS Certificate of Compliance from SatLabs, the DVB-RCS standardization group, verifying that its broadband satellite terminal product complies with the DVB-RCS standard and can interoperate with other DVB-RCS-based satellite equipment.

EMS is the market leader in the sales of DVB-RCS VSAT equipment. EMS was able to obtain its certification within one month of the commissioning of SatLabs' DVB-RCS certification facilities located at Cetecom, Germany.

"EMS's DVB-RCS certification marks yet another achievement in the commercial development of the DVB-RCS standard", says Xavier Lobao, chairman of the SatLabs Group. "Interoperability between terminals and systems is one of the key advantages of the open standard, DVB-RCS, and the main driver for continuously lowering the cost of broadband via satellite equipment and solutions. It allows customers to choose freely between multiple vendors instead of being tied to a proprietary or single-vendor technology. Three DVB-RCS terminal vendors have obtained certificates of compliance and more are expected prior to year-end."

The SatLabs Group is an international, not-for-profit association of service providers, satellite operators, system integrators, terminal manufacturers and technology providers, with the aim of ensuring interoperability between DVB-RCS terminals and systems. To that end, the SatLabs Qualification Program was launched earlier this year to provide an independent certification process.

"We are proud of the DVB-RCS heritage that we have built over the years, ever since the very conception of the standard. DVB-RCS interoperability is one of the core benefits of the DVB-RCS open standard and we believe that customers will greatly benefit from the choices available from alternative, competing vendors," says Mr. Don Osborne, senior vice president and general manager of EMS Satellite Networks. "This means that customers are no longer required to make significant and often long-term commitments to proprietary systems for two-way broadband access via satellite. EMS has been demonstrating its systems' interoperability for the last two years, and the SatLabs certification formally recognizes this capability."
