Cisco Vaults Over 4 Million Wireless Access Points Milestone
Enterprise Installed Base Tops 4 Million Wireless Access Points; Highlights Accelerated Market Growth for Wireless and Opportunity for Channel Partners
| Source: Cisco Systems, Inc.
SAN JOSE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 2, 2007 -- Cisco® (NASDAQ : CSCO ) today announced that
it reached another milestone in pervasive wireless adoption as it eclipsed
the 4 millionth enterprise wireless access point shipped driven by
increased enterprise demand for mobility services and unprecedented channel
penetration in key markets.
"By working with our channel partners, Cisco is accelerating the global
market for wireless and is expanding the adoption of wireless as a key
enabler for advanced mobility services, such as voice, security, guest
access and location-based services," said Brett Galloway, vice president
and general manager of Cisco's Wireless Networking Business Unit. "The
market is at an inflection point where wireless is moving industries beyond
information access and into an era of insight, collaboration and
awareness."
Berbee Information Networks exemplifies the growing opportunity for channel
partners. Recognizing the converging trend of wireless with other in-demand
technologies, such as voice over IP, Berbee excels in providing converged
wired and wireless network ecosystems by offering its customers a
comprehensive array of Cisco solutions.
"Increasingly customers tell us that they want the ability to unify wired
and wireless resources, services, security and management profiles," said
Josh Zenner, wireless solutions specialist at Berbee. "By coupling the
breadth and depth of Cisco's solutions portfolio with Berbee's expertise,
our customers gain a competitive edge that transcends speeds and feeds."
"Wireless is the ideal platform for almost all information technology and
knowledge-based-management systems," said Craig Mathias, a Principal with
the wireless and mobile advisory firm Farpoint Group. "Given Cisco's
performance, scalability and reliability, employees can be productive
according to their own schedule, location and personal preferences. With
wireless, work is rapidly moving away from a place you go to something you
do."
According to Dell'Oro Group's latest published market data, the calendar
fourth quarter enterprise wireless LAN market grew at 34.2 percent year
over year, reaching $1.25 billion for the 2006 calendar year. Of this,
Cisco leads the enterprise WLAN market with 65.9 percent market share,
showing strong increases in market share over the past eight quarters
across both total segment as well as dramatic increases in the WLAN
controller market.
Relentless Drumbeat of New Introductions Skyrockets Cisco Unified Wireless
Network
In 2005, Cisco unveiled its Unified Wireless Network vision, an
architectural design that integrates and utilizes the power of a
controller-based foundation to manage new mobility services across
advanced, lightweight access points. Understanding that most businesses
have wired networks in place, Cisco began to incorporate its best-in-class
wired technologies into its wireless LAN architecture, thus unifying wired
and wireless services.
In June of 2006, Cisco bolstered its Unified Wireless Network by
integrating new advanced mobility services as a core function. These
mobility services include wireless location and asset tracking, improved
voice over wireless LAN capability, hardened wireless security, and
customized guest access functionality.
Recently, Cisco furthered its Unified Wireless Network vision by
integrating the latest of its 802.1X client security supplicant offerings
and its award-winning Self-Defending Network as part of its Secure Wireless
Solution, thus providing businesses with a comprehensive end-to-end wired
and wireless security solution.
In the burgeoning outdoor wireless market, Cisco leads the industry with
the largest outdoor wireless wins, including the 1,500 square miles of
Silicon Valley, the Northern Region of Singapore, and several major U.S.
cities and state capitals, including Albany, N.Y.; Austin, Texas and
Madison, Wis. By engineering seamless integration between indoor and
outdoor wireless networks, Cisco offers unparalleled service capabilities
for users, regardless of their location.
