CaribVision's Live Telecast Of Jamaica '07 General Elections

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, July 27, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- The Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) officially kicks off detailed coverage of the 2007 general elections in Jamaica. Beginning on August 8, CaribVision, the CMC's 24-hour cable channel, will beam for the first time both regionally and internationally to 19 Caribbean territories and the United States' DirecTV channel 2181, a LIVE broadcast of the Jamaica debates, regular news updates, and bulletins throughout Election Day on August 27.

"The Jamaica poll is expected to set off a whole series of electoral announcements, possibly by the end of this year and CMC is getting its election coverage machinery in gear," said Director of News & Current Affairs Kaymar Jordan.

"We have the opportunity to cover the Jamaica debates as well as the last lap, which is the final week of campaigning, and we hope that we can replicate this plan as we go forward into other regional elections."

The debate series will focus on social, economic and financial, and national issues. Dr. Peter Phillips of the ruling People's National Party (PNP) is set to take on Dr. Kenneth Baugh of the opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) on August 8, while the JLP's Audley Shaw will square off against Dr. Omar Davies of the PNP on August 10.

The much-anticipated leaders' debate, involving Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and Opposition Leader Bruce Golding, is slated for August 11.

CaribVision's Election Day coverage on August 27 will feature a series of five-minute morning, midday, and evening reports. The regional and international channel will also telecast a one-hour Prime Time Xtra panel discussion of Jamaican analysts and experts from 9:30-10:30 p.m., followed by a LIVE feed from 10:30-12 p.m. East Caribbean time compliments of our partner station Television Jamaica (TVJ) of the RJR Group of Companies.

CMC's editorial team will also deliver detailed election coverage as part of our regular news programmes -- Caribbean Today, Caribbean Newsline, Prime Time Caribbean, and radio news programme -- Headline News & Sports. There is also comprehensive print coverage on CANANews.com, the premier source for Caribbean news and current affairs information.
