The Power Situation in Norway as of 21 June 2006

Lysaker, 21 June 2006

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Scarce inflow for the fifth consecutive week
In week 24 the estimated inflow was 5.5 TWh. This is 90 percent of normal and the inflow has been below normal the last five weeks. Nevertheless, the inflow rose by 1.3 TWh. from week 23 to week 24. The increased inflow is mainly explained by increased snowmelt due to higher temperatures. In addition, increased precipitation contributed to the increased inflow. At the end of week 24 the reservoir levels in Norway were 52.4 percent, after an increase of 4.4 percentage points. The reservoir levels are at present 1.2 percentage points below last year and 2.5 percentage points below the median value for this week.

The Nordic net import fell by 60 percent from week 23 to week 24 and the total net import was 137 GWh in week 24. The reduced net import is explained by lower Finnish import from Russia due to maintenance of the interconnectors. In addition, higher power prices in Germany contributed to reduced Nordic net import. Together with reduced production in Sweden this contributed to higher Nordic power prices. In Norway, increased prices and inflow led to increased Norwegian production. The Norwegian production increased by six percent from week 23 to week 24.
