IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 5, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC), a leading manufacturer of analog and mixed signal integrated circuits and high reliability semiconductors, has announced the addition of a performance-rich backlight controller to its portfolio of integrated circuits for powering 7-15 inch LCD displays that use cold cathode fluorescent lamps.
Designated the LX6512(tm), the new backlight controller is primarily designed to provide high performance in cost competitive, smaller LCD display applications that include notebook computers, web tablets, digital picture frames, portable DVD players but substantial interest is also anticipated in select larger screen monitors and TVs up to 30 inches.
The controller supports either resonant full bridge or direct push-pull inverter drive configurations. Its features include wide range dimming, patented striking topology with low stress to transformers, programmable operating dimming frequency and time-out protection, fixed operating frequency and safety features protecting against open lamp, broken lamp and short-circuit faults.
"We're already seeing strong adoption rates for this important addition to our CCFL controller portfolio," said Steven Litchfield, Executive Vice President and President of Microsemi's Analog Mixed Signal Group. "The LX6512 controller is the ideal product offering for a fast growing segment of the market primarily targeted for single-lamp applications along with some select opportunities in a number of multi-lamp applications."
The LX6512 controller is manufactured on a cost-effective five volt silicon process which makes it an ideal fit for low voltage lithium Ion powered portable appliances. In applications where higher drive voltages are available, the controller can be powered with five volts and the output stage efficiently supplied with the available higher voltage supply rail.
"Microsemi is known within the industry for our leadership in backlighting power technology," Litchfield said, "and we believe the LX6512 controller sets a high new standard in this marketplace for price-performance value."
The LX6512 controller is available for immediate sampling and delivery in either a 16-pin QFN package measuring only 3 mm square, or a 16-pin TSSOP package measuring 4.5 x 5.1 mm.
Technical information is available on the Microsemi web site, http://www.microsemi.com. Samples can be ordered through this site, or from Microsemi sales representatives and authorized distributors. In 10K lot quantities, the unit price for the LX6512 is $0.91 in a QFN package and $0.97 in the TSSOP package.
Microsemi's resonant strike design provides unsurpassed fluorescent lamp striking power combined with highest operating efficiency. All Microsemi CCFL controller designs are protected by U.S. Patents: 5,615,093; 5,923,129; 593,121; 6,198,234; and other patents pending.
