Regional Magazines Dominate Magazine Category in 2008 According to National Directory of Magazines

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - September 23, 2008) - Regional magazines once again outnumber any
other category of magazines with more than 1,126 titles in 2008, according
to the new edition of The National Directory of Magazines
(www.mediafinder.com) released today. It is the largest and most complete
directory of U.S. and Canadian magazines, tabloids and major journals.
Other magazine categories that top the list in 2008 include: Medicine with
1,119 titles, and Ethnic with 952 titles. Last year, Regional magazines
also ranked number one in number of titles, with 1,138.
"Regional magazines capitalize on the fascination with 'things local' and
also benefit from strong local advertising," said Trish Hagood, President
of Oxbridge Communications, publisher of the National Directory of
Magazines. "Many regional
magazines are also pitched to an upscale audience making them doubly

Looking at five year magazine growth tends (2003-2008), home magazines
jumped from 83 to 241; snow and ice sports are up from 51-106; and nursing
magazines are up from 92 to 177. Showing the sharpest decline over the five
years are news publications, down 39 percent (from 75 to 46); and
management magazines, down 32 percent (from 127 to 86).
The National Directory of Magazines includes information on 20,590 titles,
including 16,596 magazines, tabloids, specialized newspapers, and major
journals that carry advertising.
In The National Directory of Magazines, publication titles are divided into
260 subject categories from Accounting to Zoology. Top magazine categories

Regional, Medicine, and Ethnic are Religion & Theology (772), Travel (735),
Business & Industry (626), College Alumni (532), Automotive (492), Health &
Fitness (488) and College Student Press (435).
