Veterans Affairs Selects Dell PAN System for Early Detection of Pandemics

PAN Manager on Dell Servers Is the Backbone of Mission-Essential VA Application

MARLBORO, MA--(Marketwire - March 12, 2009) -

News Facts

-- The US Department of Veterans Affairs Corporate Data Center Operations
(CDCO) will be implementing the Dell PAN System as a key component of the
mission-essential Health Associated Infection & Influenza Surveillance
    System (HAIISS).
-- HAIISS is an early warning system for influenza or hospital-acquired
infectious disease outbreaks or pandemics. The system collects data on
reported influenza and infectious diseases cases from the 100+ VA centers
throughout the US that treat millions of veterans and their families each
    year.
-- The initial purchase supports a pilot system of HAIISS, scheduled to
launch in late spring 2009. Upon completion of the pilot, the hardware will
be rescaled before being rolled out to VA centers across the nation.
-- The Dell PAN System integrates PAN Manager Software by Egenera with
Dell servers allowing CDCO to easily scale the HAIISS application and their
Dell infrastructure, as well as enabling servers to be easily and quickly
provisioned into virtual or physical machines while maintaining high
availability of the mission-critical HAIISS application.
-- The Dell PAN System unifies virtual and physical resources to simplify
the data center, and enables rapid provisioning to meet VA's Contingency
    Planning requirements.

"The Dell PAN system met requirements for a processing resource pool that could be resized and reallocated as needs changed," said James Yaple, Chief Technology Officer at CDCO. "We required a configuration that had the ability to expand with a linear cost structure as the HAIISS rollout progressed."

"The Dell PAN System provides high availability and other mission-critical functionality to cost-effectively meet the needs of organizations such as VA, thereby helping position Dell as a strategic player in the data center," said Mike Thompson, president, CEO and chairman of Egenera.

About the Dell PAN System

The Dell PAN System is an integrated product that transforms Dell servers into flexible resources that can rapidly and automatically allocated based on demand requirements. The software abstracts physical data center components (compute, I/O, network) so they can be orchestrated (flexibly-managed) to create a policy-based, highly-available computing platform. The system simplifies the rapid provisioning and repurposing of both physical and virtual servers, and provides unified HA and verifiable DR. The customer benefits from an infrastructure with massive efficiencies and overall cost reduction for mission-critical applications.
