CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwire - December 1, 2009) - On December 9, the
MIT Enterprise Forum of
Cambridge will present a session on how to achieve a sustainable future
by overcoming the challenges of greenhouse gas admissions. The session will
feature a keynote presentation by Tony Meggs, senior member of the
MIT Energy Initiative, to discuss
factors involved in reducing carbon emissions. Meggs will share insights on
technologies used to capture and re-use CO2, as well as opportunities to
develop financing and trading strategies based on carbon assets.
Following Meggs' presentation, a panel of experts will discuss the
management of carbon as an asset, carbon capture and sequestration, and
expanding use of CO2 to develop polymers and specialty chemicals. The panel
will be moderated by Jim Matheson, general partner at Flagship Ventures.
Also happening on Wednesday, the
MIT Energy Club will present a
panel to take a deep dive into carbon capture and sequestration. The panel
will feature Howard Herzog, Ruben Juanes and John Reilly from MIT, and
Joseph Chaisson from the Clean Air Task Force. The session will take place
from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. in MIT Building 66 (Landau Building), Room 66-110 at
25 Ames Street, Cambridge.
Keynote speaker:
Tony Meggs is a senior member of the MIT Energy Initiative and co-chair of
a study on the future of natural gas. Meggs recently retired as group VP
for technology at BP, a position he held since 2001. At BP, Meggs oversaw
substantial increases in technology activity and an increasing focus on the
longer term, including the commitment of $500 million to the creation of an
energy biology institute. His career with BP began in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska,
where he was the reservoir engineering supervisor with Sohio in the
mid-1980s.
Panelists:
Josh Green is co-founder and CEO at
Verdeo Group, a leading player in
CO2 asset management. Previously, he was VP and director of Latin America
at Climate Change Capital, where he was responsible for developing and
managing a portfolio of carbon investments for the firm's $1 billion carbon
fund. Prior, Green served as COO of the Massachusetts Renewable Energy
Trust, a $150 million clean energy fund.
Dr. Kurt House is co-founder, president and chief scientist at
C12, a venture-backed alternative
energy company. A fellow at MIT, House studies and develops methods for
large-scale capture and storage of human-made carbon dioxide. He recently
patented electrochemical weathering, a novel process that expedites the
ocean's natural ability to absorb carbon dioxide and can be used to produce
carbon negative commodities, such as hydrogen, chlorine and cement.
Jim Mahoney is CEO of
Novomer, a new
materials company pioneering green plastics, polymers and other chemicals.
Mahoney has spent more than 20 years at the executive level in
biotechnology, healthcare and specialty chemicals companies and was most
recently CEO at Surface Logix. Prior to that, Mahoney held senior executive
positions at Dade Behring Inc., Baxter International and FMC Corporation.
David O'Connor is SVP for the Energy and Clean Technology division of
ML Strategies. O'Connor currently
serves on several professional and philanthropic boards, including the
board of directors of the Environmental Business Council of New England and
the governing board of the Massachusetts Ocean Partnership at the
University of Massachusetts. Most recently, he served as the Massachusetts
Commissioner of Energy Resources from 1995 through 2007.
Jim Matheson joined
Flagship
Ventures in 2000 and focuses on creating and funding new ventures
in the sustainability, clean technology and special technologies
arenas. Jim earned an MBA from The Harvard Business School, a Bachelor
of Science with honors from the United States Naval Academy and retired
as a Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves.
