Capto Consulting's Founder & President, Tracy Currie, Joins University of Tennessee Program Faculty to Lead Research on IT Outsourcing


DENVER, CO--(Marketwire - March 31, 2010) -  Capto Consulting, the leader in IT Outsourcing 2.0, today announced its founder and President, Tracy Currie, has joined the program faculty at the University of Tennessee's Center for Executive Education (UT) to lead a research study on IT Outsourcing, in an effort to identify ways to improve operational and economic outcomes over the life of an outsourced relationship.

Currie's work will be an extension of the pioneering research in Vested Outsourcing methodology by UT's Kate Vitasek. The University of Tennessee's original outsourcing research was commissioned by the United States Air Force as part of a four year, multi-million dollar study and led to the book "Vested Outsourcing: Five Rules That Will Transform Outsourcing." In it, lead researcher Kate Vitasek outlines 10 inherent (and often invisible) ailments in today's flawed outsourcing agreements are identified, followed by five foundational tenets of what can constitute a win/win relationship.

Outsourcing is a $6 trillion industry. It is so commonplace that more than three out of five companies (63 percent) participating in a recent study by the research and consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers have outsourced a business process to a third party. Of the 304 top decision-makers involved in the study, 46 percent said that outsourcing's importance has increased during the past three years. In addition, 42 percent indicated their company's use of outsourcing has increased. Almost one-quarter (23 percent) have outsourcing programs in their current business plans.

For years IT outsourcing contracts have been transaction-based and cost-based. The problem is that this conventional approach fails to ensure costs are aligned with business objectives and lacks incentives that encourage innovation to transform how the work is done over time.

"Shifting from basic transaction and cost based outsourcing to performance and outcome based IT outsourcing contracts has been a topic of conversation for some time, yet there seems to be a pronounced gap in the knowledge of what the next steps should be," said Currie. "By building on the original research Kate Vitasek and her team conducted with the Air Force and leading Fortune 500 companies, we believe we can offer Fortune 1000 companies a structured methodology and tools that can bridge that gap."

Vested IT Research Project:
