Leading Healthcare and Canon Lawyer Joins Morris, Manning & Martin in DC

WASHINGTON, DC and ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwire - May 26, 2010) -  Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP, one of Atlanta's leading law firms and an AmLaw 200 firm, is pleased to announce Paul F. Danello has joined the firm as a partner in the Washington, D.C. office. Danello is a prominent and internationally-recognized healthcare lawyer with over 30 years of experience focused on the corporate, financing and government regulatory issues impacting the healthcare industry. Danello has the distinction of being both a civil and canon lawyer.

His experience includes serving for three years as a key member of an elite specialty team of highly-experienced healthcare lawyers who provided guidance to the national healthcare industry, within the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, on federal fraud and abuse laws. He also developed interpretive and "safe harbor" regulations to the anti-kickback statute and the Ethics in Patient Referrals Act (Stark Law).

Danello has considerable experience in hospital mergers, acquisitions and affiliations. He also has extensive experience restructuring complex health system corporate organizations, including public hospital conversions. His considerable national and international experience is a significant addition to the firm's Healthcare Practice, which is ranked in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business. The practice has team members in Atlanta, Savannah and Washington.

"Paul is a tremendous addition to our Healthcare Practice," said Louise M. Wells, Morris, Manning & Martin's Managing Partner. She added, "The build-up of our talented healthcare team is a core strategic priority for the firm and adding Paul is huge step to achieving our long-term objectives."

Danello has in-depth experience with the complex canonical and theological considerations raised by the mergers, acquisitions, affiliations and changes of sponsorship of Catholic healthcare providers. He represents Catholic health systems and facilities across the entire spectrum of activities in which these organizations engage. He also works with numerous schools and colleges in the U.S. and Europe on matters involving both Catholic canon law and civil law.

"In this environment of heightened regulatory scrutiny, Paul's experience working at the Office of the Inspector General will be tremendously valuable to our clients," offered Robert C. Threlkeld, head of the firm's Healthcare Practice. "Paul enhances our strong corporate and regulatory knowledge base and brings a unique understanding of Catholic and other faith-based hospital systems."

Since 1999, Danello has been listed in the Guide to World's Leading Healthcare Lawyers. He is a practicing canon lawyer with licentiate and doctorate degrees in Canon Law and a Bachelor of Sacred Theology, all summa cum laude, from the Pontifical Studorium Universitatis a Sancto Thoma Acquinate in Urbe, Rome. He has degrees from Columbia University (J.D.), Oxford University (M.A. and B.A. honors) and Princeton University (A.B. honors).
